Why Orb is built different

A new breed of billing engine

Orb weaves best in class monetization tooling into a robust data layer to give you the tools to analyze, plan and action on revenue strategy.

Revenue Graph data foundation

Your data is your moat—why drain it?

Most billing engines treat large-scale event data as a problem to be pared down. Orb believes it’s your competitive advantage.

That’s why we built Revenue Graph—an event store that connects monetization decisions to real data. This billing foundation gives you:

  • Accurate invoices that adapt to price or contract changes
  • Auditable records that retain adjustments, changes and corrections
  • Actionable insights to optimize your price models

Automate usage based billing

Meter, manage, and cut the manual

  • Meter usage at scale without added engineering labor
  • Manage customers, contracts and prices from a single source of truth
  • Adapt to infrastructure outages and updated contracts

Execute pricing

Fast, flexible, and customer-centric

Orb’s usage based billing engine gives you the tools to not only change prices, but build rollout plans and activate changes across your stack.

  • Set a strategy by defining prices globally by SKU
  • Tailor plans and price changes to individual customers
  • Ship changes to pricing pages, calculators and checkout flows
  • Trigger alerts and webhooks to help customers plan and manage usage

FAQs

Usage-based billing charges customers for what they consume instead of a flat subscription fee. Usage is metered as raw events, aggregated into a billable metric, and priced at the end of each period. Orb runs that whole path, from event ingestion to invoice.

A billable metric is the unit a company charges for — API calls, GB stored, tokens processed, tasks completed, seats active. Orb defines metrics in SQL over raw events, so changing a definition doesn't require new instrumentation. Learn more here.

Orb recalculates. Because every invoice is a query over immutable raw events, late or corrected data can be backfilled and affected invoices are recomputed automatically — no correction events, no manual adjustments. Learn more here.

Orb's enterprise platform is regularly stress-tested to volumes such as 250,000+ events/second, with idempotency guarantees on ingestion so data stays complete and correct.

Many customers find that building in-house works fine, until it doesn’t. Late-data corrections, pricing migrations, proration edge cases, audit trails, and revenue recognition all land on engineering permanently. Buying makes sense when pricing should be a product decision instead of a roadmap item.

Yes. Orb simulates proposed pricing against real historical usage, so the per-customer revenue impact is visible before anything ships. Teams use it to de-risk migrations and bring a defensible number to a pricing decision. Learn more about Orb Simulations.
